Matico (Piper aduncum) leaves – 32 oz. (1 kg) bulk powder.

Preparations

The leaves of Matico are traditionally prepared as a decoction or infusion taken at a suggested dosage of 1 cup 3 times daily.

To prepare an infusion of Matico, place 1 tsp. of the powdered leaves in a tea ball or gauze bag and allow the powder to steep in 5 oz. (150 mL) of freshly boiled hot water in a covered pot for 10–15 minutes. Pour the infusion through a fine strainer to remove any sediment and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. Refrigerate unused portions in a well-sealed container.

Decoctions are stronger preparations than infusions. To prepare a decoction of Matico, 1 tsp. of the powdered leaves is used for each 8 oz. of water. Using medium-high heat, bring water to a boil in an open pot and then add the powder. Reduce the heat to medium-low and place the lid on the pot. Allow the mixture to simmer for 20 minutes. Pour the mixture through a fine strainer and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. Refrigerate unused portions in a well-sealed container.
