Guarana (Paullinia cupana) seed 32 oz. (1 kg.) bulk powder.
Preparations
Guarana is a climbing shrub indigenous to the Amazon basin. Since the seeds of guarana contain around twice the content of caffeine as coffee seeds, they may serve as a coffee substitute. In Paraguay, the Guaraní Indians prepared an infusion (tea) from the finely powdered dried seeds. After kneading the powder into a kind of dough, they put a chunk of the dough into a cup and added sugar and hot water. Traditionally, the tea is taken at a dosage of one-half to 1 cup, 1 to 3 times daily.
To prepare a tea from the powdered seeds, put 2 g in a tea ball or gauze bag and allow the powder to steep in 250 mL of freshly boiled hot water in a covered pot for 1015 minutes. Pour the infusion through a fine strainer to remove any sediment and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. Refrigerate unused portions in a well-sealed container.
