Cumaseba (Swartzia polyphylla) bark – bulk powder.
Preparations
A tree growing up to 15 meters in height, cumeseba is found across an extensive range in the Amazon basin, from the Guianas to Venezuela, Columbia, Peru, and Brazil. In different parts of the Amazon, the bark has diverse uses, but is commonly taken as a decoction (1 cup 2 times daily) traditionally believed to impart strength.
To prepare a decoction of cumeseba, place 1 teaspoon of the powdered bark in 1 liter of boiling water in a ceramic pot. Put the cover on the pot and allow the mixture to boil for 10 minutes. Turn the temperature down to low and allow the mixture to simmer until 200 mL remain. Pour the decoction through a fine strainer to remove any sediment and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. Refrigerate unused portions in a well sealed container. If you find the flavor too strong, add water to taste.
